Plan Ahead

Go over your airline's policies for traveling with power wheelchairs. It's also a good idea to arrive early and speak to the reps if early check-in or pre-board options are available. Also, make sure to book all of your transportation in advance. 

Checking in your equipment

Your travel-approved power wheelchair can be checked at the ticket counter and/or gate. Make sure you give yourself enough time to ensure proper handling of your equipment at the airport. 

Manual wheelchair users may have their equipment stowed on board upon request. Make sure you check with your airline for accommodations.

Your manual wheelchair can be checked for stowage in the cargo bin at either the ticket counter or gate. Provide as much information about your wheelchair as possible to airline employees so they can properly handle and load it.

All of your detachable and personal items, such as the seat cushions, sideguards, and footrests, can be carried on the flight or tagged and stowed with your wheelchair in the cargo bin.

Tips for Battery Use

• Use batteries that have been offered by suppliers only. Travel only with special lithium batteries designed specifically for use in your electric wheelchair.
• Check the voltage at your destination.  In America, it’s 110 volts, but in most other countries in the world are 220+ volts.
