* Afikim's documents give the S4 440 to 500 lbs and the S3 352 to 450 lbs, and their range as 28 to 38 miles; we show the lower capacity until Afikim confirms. Bespoke's website rates the Platinum for 500 lbs and its manual for 400. Merits rates the Silverado Extreme at 55 miles with two 100Ah batteries; our listing offers 75Ah as standard and 100Ah as an upgrade.

Who each one suits

• Riders near 450 to 500 lbs: the Excursion (496 lbs) and the Silverado Extreme (450 lbs). Shoprider's manual lowers the Excursion's climbing rating as rider weight goes up, and the Silverado weighs 387 lbs, with a 185 lb base.
• Two riders: the Bespoke Supreme seats up to 2 riders on a saddle seat with no armrests, rated for 400 lbs; the Afiscooter S4 Dual Seat has a 33 inch wide seat.
• Range and speed: every Bespoke model goes up to 35 miles and has a 4, 8 and 15 mph switch. Bespoke lists slopes up to 15 degrees, but its manual doesn't recommend more than 10, and the Platinum has an 86.6 inch turning radius.
• Taking it apart: the Gladiator's heaviest piece is the 79 lb front section; the Expedition XL4 comes apart, with 22 lb batteries.
• Shade: the Afiscooter C4 with canopy, rated for 330 lbs, 25 to 31 miles, 4 inches of ground clearance.
• Lightest here: the Shoprider Explorer, 205 lbs with batteries, rated for 300 lbs, up to 24 miles. Its manual allows 9 degrees at 200 lbs and level ground only at 300 lbs.

What to check before you buy

• Weight capacity: at least 30 to 40 lbs above the rider's weight.
• Climbing at your weight: some makers lower the slope rating as rider weight goes up (Shoprider's manuals do), so ask us for the chart.
• Ground clearance: it limits the bumps and curbs a scooter can clear.
• Batteries: range depends on which batteries ship; check the option you order.
• Storage: these scooters weigh 205 to 387 lbs, so plan where yours will be parked and charged.
• Returns: Afikim and Discover Your Mobility scooters can't be returned under our refund policy; the others have 30 days from delivery with a 20% restocking fee.
